If you want to link to a PDF rather than embed it on the page using a Media > File block, do the following:
- Upload the PDF to the Media Library
- After upload use the “Copy URL to clipboard” button to get the URL – see screenshot below. The screenshot is what you’ll get after upload has been processed and you select the item from the library. There’s another link or button available during the upload process.
- Go to the page or section where you want the link
- Highlight the text and add the link using the URL copied above. Be sure to check “Open link in new tab” for best usability. Note that creating the link might be different in various block or custom field types. You often have to click again to set the Open in a new tab checkbox. They don’t make that easy and the process is often different depending on where you’re adding the link.

WYSIWYG Block link addition – these blocks are often used in Custom areas and are not the standard Gutenberg block.

Gutenberg block link addition. Note that the link shown is an on page anchor link. After setting the link with the right curved arrow you would add the “Open in new tab” check for PDF’s or off site links. On page anchors don’t use the new tab of course.
