How Do I Get Listed in the Google Local Pack?

The Google Local Pack (or Google 3-Pack) is a group of three local business listings that appear in the search results when you search for local products or services.

For instance, if you were to type in “veterinarian in Athens, GA,” you’ll see three local listings at the very top of the search results page, as shown below.

The listings are shown based on the proximity to your location. Whether you are using a mobile device, or at home on your cable internet connection, search engines have a very good idea of your location based on your IP address.

Setting up Google My Business

The listings in Google Local Pack are set up in Google My Business. If you haven’t already, you should probably set up your free Google My Business listing. Doing so will give you the opportunity to show up in the local business results.

Most local businesses verify by mail. Some businesses, like service area businesses, can verify by email, phone, or Search Console.

The Local Pack listing area also includes a map of the relevant area and a link to View All which opens up the Google Local Results with the complete list of local businesses that have registered with Google.

Some of the known ranking factors for the Local Pack are similar to organic search rankings, and they include:

  • The relevance of the business to the search term you used.
  • The distance to the business from your current location.
  • The popularity of the business, usually based on third-party review sites.
  • Links to the business’ website from other websites and social media apps.
  • Listings in local directories such as Chamber of Commerce websites.

And let’s not forget Bing!

The Bing search engine also has a similar system for businesses called Bing Places for Business. The screenshot below shows the results of a search for “Atlanta, GA Veterinarians”.

While you’re setting up Google My Business, go ahead and get your Bing listing set up as well. It’s similar information so you can do both while you have all of your files open and your information at hand.

To verify ownership of your business on Bing Places for Business, a unique PIN will be sent to you via postal mail, email, text message or a phone call. If you have a business with multiple locations you can verify all of your businesses at once.

Duck Duck Go also has local listings

Here’s the search results for “Greenville SC Veterinarians”. Unfortunately (or fortunately for the users) DuckDuckGo doesn’t know exactly where the searcher is located and isn’t as targeted with it’s local results. Also, at this time, there’s no way to create a business listing on Duck Duck Go.

Getting your free business listing is step one to search engine optimization for both Bing and Google. The process is super easy and self-explanatory. It will take you about 15 to 20 minutes for both search engines. Click below to get started!
